MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Only school board members left Thursday's special called meeting knowing the results of an investigation into the leadership of Monroe City School's Superintendent Kathleen Harris.
The board members were given the report at the top of the meeting. The attorney who prepared the report informed the board it contained discussion of character and competency and fitness of several employees and board members, therefore he urged the board to keep the findings confidential. The board went into executive session for nearly two hours to read the report.
"We read through the whole report, of course it took about an hour and a half." said Board President Verbon Muhammad.
Upon entering public session, board member Vickie Dayton introduced three motions. Dayton moved for the Superintendent to remain on suspension pending written charges to remove Harris, moved for Blunt to draw charges up of findings, and to allow Derenda Flowers to remain the acting Superintendent. All motions passed.
"I think the community will think and be pleased with us taking this step." said Muhammad.
As far as the cost of investigation, Muhammad said he wasn't sure of the cost, "Well we haven't got that, Mr. Blunt has not presented us with a bill yet, but we think it will be better than the way were going."
A meeting will be held July 30 at 9 a.m., Attorney Blunt will then announce the charges to the public.
The board voted last month to suspend Harris with pay and investigate operations under her leadership. Harris then sued the board for a possible meeting violation, but the lawsuit was dismissed in court on July 13 after District Judge Ellender found no evidence of secret meetings.
