GRAMBLING, La. (KNOE 8 News) - It's a proud day at Grambling State University, heavy sanctions slapped against Penn State is allowing the University to call coach Eddie Robinson the winningest coach in NCAA history, its something residents are rejoicing about.
"It's wonderful and it speaks well for coach Rob," said one supporter. "Not to take anything from the other institution or the other guy but hey we love it."
Many residents that we spoke to in Lincoln Parish are proud that former Grambling State University Coach Eddie Robinson is back on top of the wins' list for major college football
"I can't help it but the Paterno name is a big name," said supporter Augusta Clarke. "And so is Eddie Robinson.
Robinson had 408 victories -- that's one less than Joe Paterno's 409.
Now that the NCAA has vacated all wins from Penn State from 1998 until 2011 - it puts Robinson back to the top of the wins' list.
Monday, the university explained why his victories supercede the game of football.
"Eddie G. Robinson took men largely from small towns with virtually no equipment to play with compared to Penn State and most of the larger universities and he turned these men into legends," said GSU president Frank Pogue. "The legends that we are recognizing today, Eddie Robinson was able to say to those men, that you are somebody."
The town's mayor made the request to vacate some of Penn state's victories. He explained what it means for the community.
"The Eddie Robinson museum is the most frequented museum in the state," said Mayor Eddie Jones. "And we knew by regaining that title of being the home of the winningest coach in college football then more tourist would come and they would have more of a purpose to come."
Although taking away the victories doesn't necessarily help the victims, Jones said he hopes it does bring them some resolve.
