WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Ouachita Parish Alternative Center will open its doors this school year, but have no students.
The state has labeled the Alternative Center as academically unacceptable based on their students most recent test scores.
"Now they're not giving waivers to alternative schools anymore for their scores," says Randy Hammett, OPSB Director of High Schools, "they are getting in a position where they could be eligible for state takeover."
Hammett says many areas of the state are now reorganizing their alternative schools so that the majority of students' test scores won't count. That's exactly what Ouachita Parish School Board is doing. All of the existing student programs at the alternative school will be moved to schools where they are needed and only students sent to OPAC after being expelled will attend this year.
"There won't be anybody losing there job because of this. No one will lose their job, they just may be moved to a different school," says Hammett.
Because the center will exclusively be an expulsion school, OPSB anticipates few students for the rest of 2012.
