Caldwell Parish Disaster Drill

KELLY, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Authorities from the Caldwell Emergency Response Team joined efforts with local law enforcement for a disaster drill.

"You never know when something is going to happen in the area, whether it be a train derailment, or an 18-wheeler, or a airplane crash," says Caldwell Sheriff Steve May, "and we just want to try to stay prepared."

The scenario for this emergency preparedness event was a plane crash in the woods along Highway 165 in Kelly, Louisiana.

Local inmates were cast as injured crash victims, and once in place, teams of local officers were sent into the woods on search and rescue missions. After being rescued, inmates were brought out on stretchers as if actually injured.

"The ambulance service will carry them back to the hospital because the hospital has to be involved in a training exercise a couple times a year also, so this not only benefits us, this benefits the hospitals for their training exercise," says May.

Although the air-life helicopter was unable to fly out due to the weather, the exercise was a success. Sheriff May hopes to see more parish residents participate in the next training event.

"You know, if they want to get involved in something, call and volunteer," says May, "We could always use some more help for emergency situations like this."

To volunteer or to find out about the next disaster drill, contact the Caldwell Parish Sheriff's Department at (318) 649-2345.
