MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - A Corps. of Engineers' plan to cut trees, power posts, fences and other objects in a stretch of the Ouachita River levee system from Morehouse Parish to Caldwell Parish has brought quick response from one Louisiana Congressman.

In a letter to Ass't Sec'y of the Army for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy, 5th District Congressman Rodney Alexander said that while he appreciated the Corps' respect for the safety of the American people, that "...issuing determinations on levee integrity, in addition to using established science, I believe it is imperative to factor in good collective judgement and common sense."

The Congressmen goes on to say, "In this case, it makes little sense to order the expenditure of scarce dollars to remove items that pose little or no risk, while cave-ins along the same levee continue to worsen and become more of a threat and cost burden (which) do cause a severe threat to the integrity of the levee," adding  that "...the local levee board is being forced to divert its focus and resources from risks that are serious to those that are inconsequential."
