Posted: Updated:

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The West Nile Virus has been a concern for many people in the Bayou State this year, but what about your beloved animals? Could they become a victim to the virus?

An increase in Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus cases in horses has prompted the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry advises horse owners to have them vaccinated!

Dr. Clark Cooper of Cooper Veterinary Hospital in West Monroe says like humans its contracted from mosquitoes.

While many people forget to get vaccinated themselves they need to also keep their pets in mind Cooper says vaccinate your horses two weeks before hand.

"It takes about 2 weeks to build any immunity and about a month after you vaccinate them so its here now, if you wait another month before you start seeing cases they need to be vaccinated last month," explains Dr. Cooper.
