La. Delta Community College budget released

MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2013 was released today by the school's Interim Chancellor, Dr. G. Jeremiah Ryan.

The budget will be $18,190,950, a 5.2% decrease from the FY 2012 expenditure plan. The budget requires the approval of the Board of Supervisors of the Louisiana Community & Technical College System. The College's state assistance was cut by $2,290,577 by the state.

"I compliment the staff who drafted the budget," Ryan said. "Their task was near impossible given the magnitude of the cut. The budget preserves our mission and enables us to maintain our programs and services for our students.  In fact, we anticipate increased enrollment this fall across our eight campuses.

"Unfortunately we will not be able to add staff in Student Services and new full time faculty to accommodate our continued enrollment increases. Our 10% tuition increase enabled us to save all our courses, programs, campuses and staff so that the residents of our region will continue to have affordable access to their community college.

"We are confident that we will be able to serve everyone who wishes to attend Louisiana Delta Community College," Ryan commented.

The budget does, however, alter the annual teaching contract of former technical college faculty from 12 months to 9 months. This change aligns the former technical college faculty with their community college colleagues. This proposal also requires the approval of the LCTCS Board.  It is also a reflection of the fact that summer school enrollment is decreasing across the LA Delta campuses because students may no longer receive Federal Pell grants to pursue summer studies.  All faculty at LA Delta will still be able to teach for an adjunct stipend in the summer if enrollment is sufficient.

The combined institution currently serves around 4700 students from the twelve parishes in the Northeast Louisiana region.
