MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Louisiana Democratic Party is spending the day in Monroe. It's part of their Louisiana State Tour and is serving as an opportunity for party leaders, lawmakers, and every day people to unify. Workshops were held throughout the day to discuss the future party strategy and platforms.

Louisiana democratic party chairwoman Karen Peterson says it's good preparation for the upcoming elections. "You can't stay in Baton Rouge and build a party, you've got to get out and do outreach, there's a whole new attitude, there's a lot of energy and enthusiasm about making sure that people understand the stark contrast about the Louisiana Democratic party and what the republicans stand for, quite honestly." said state Senator Peterson.

Peterson said they're having a lot of great engagement with their core constituencies. Throughout the day, Peterson said they had met with clergy with young democrats, with women groups and had a lot of discussion on things like health care. "Certainly that's on the top of the news right now, not just in the state but at the federal level, as well as public education and what is the right way to provide for a good public education for our citizens." said Peterson.

The next "Day of Democrats" will be on July 24th in New Orleans.
