The fight is on in Ouachita Parish - 137 positive pools of West Nile Virus

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement director Shannon Rider said the parish is upping their mosquito fighting efforts after tests indicate that infected blood sucking mosquitoes are in the area.

"Thus far this year out of 700 pools, 137 pools have tested positive for west Nile," said Rider.

That's why the parish will be launching it's third aerial mission Tuesday night. Something the parish hasn't done in years.

"That is absolutely not the norm," said Rider. "The last time we aerially sprayed was back in 2009 and that was only one mission of two flights."

But that hasn't been enough for the disease carrying critters. So far, the board has purchased more than three hundred thousand dollars worth of chemicals for the aerial treatments.

Rider said if we get more rain - it may help them fight the bite.

"It will help with the flushing of infrastructure," said Rider. "Especially in the more urban areas, so it will help out with those breeding sights."
