WATERPROOF, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Tensas Parish sheriff's office is still trying to figure out how an inmate working in the kitchen at the office got an unmarked police car and drove it all the way across the country.

43-year-old Benjamin Gottke was a trustee, and somehow got hold of the keys to the unmarked police car and took off. Ultimately, he was arrested in Maine apparently trying to enter Canada.

Gottke was serving time on a burglary charge when he took off. At the time, he had only nine months left to serve on his sentence. Now he's facing charges which include resisting arrest, escape, and stealing a car.

Tensas Parish Sheriff Rickey Jones says he's not sure how Gottke did it, but he adds that it won't happen again.
