MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - An alligator was spotted in a canal off Louisville Avenue near Aaron's Electronics.
Jeremy Pruitt, a nuisance alligator trapper for the state, and two Monroe police officers caught the gator. Pruitt says this was is his second catch this week.
John Hanks, Biologist Supervisor at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says in Louisiana finding an out-of-place alligator is a common occurrence.
"We get several calls a day on alligators, and some of them are nuisance alligators," says Hanks, "but in Louisiana there aren't many places where there is water where there aren't alligators."
When the water level rises, alligators can easily travel down a stream, ditch, or canal. The alligator captured on Louisville is considered small and thought to just be looking for a home. There are no full-proof preventative measures against alligators, but Wildlife and Fisheries advises property owners to keep an eye out.
If you ever encounter an alligator, never try to take the situation into your own hands. Always contact your local authorities or Wildlife and Fisheries Department.
