La. voucher program apps pouring in

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The Louisiana education department has now received more than 10,000 applications for the state's voucher program, which is slated to start next month.

About 1,700 of the applicants are in an existing New Orleans voucher program. They are, according to reports from New Orleans, planning on continuing in that program, too. The rest of the applicants will be vying for slots available to new students under the statewide program supported by governor Jindal.

The seats in the program will be distributed after being passed out in a planned lottery process to be held next week.

In making the announcement, State School Superintendant John White also announced the criteria for schools participating in the program, including increased scrutiny for schools that are seeking to more than double their enrollment by adding voucher students.
