MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - More work is on the way finalizing a budget for the 2012 - 2013 fiscal year.
"The last place where you want to cut, is in the classroom," Monroe Federation of Teachers President Sandie Lollie said.
She says the proposed cuts to the spending plan wasn't talked about in Monday's finance committee meeting, that were brought up during Tuesday's general board meeting.
"If there is a list, and I hear that there is a list now consisting of eight different topics, they were not brought to us," Lollie said.
That list calling for cost saving measures is this one. The reductions range from cuts in the central office and media center, along with suspending all long-term paid vacations. And cutting back on textbook purchases. Plus, there was an item to hold off on all overtime pay, raises, and stipends for any and all workers for a year.
"When it comes to overtime,it's just, it can be all kinds of people. Not just your custodial, your maintenance, we're looking into that because we don't know," Board member Vickie Krutzer said.
The chairperson of the finance committee, Board Member Vickie Krutzer says during a previous fiscal year, the school system handed out about $2 million just in overtime.
The teacher unions are on alert as the paychecks of workers make up more than 80% of the budget.
"We're just trying to look at all areas that are simple and easy to cut, without cutting people," Krutzer said.
Since the school system is operating without a budget, Krutzer pointed out that the board should look into spending $8 million this month to pay the district's workers.
Board President Verbon Muhammad hopes to slash $30,000 in the transportation area of the spending plan. He says that puts several after school programs on the chopping block.
Board members voted to send the proposed cuts back to the finance committee for a touch up.
