GRAMBLING, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs is underway at Grambling State University for its seventh straight year.

The program invites sophomore and junior students from certain high schools across the state  to participate in a week long academic and leadership camp.

Dr. Elaine Foster, tutor/NASA/counselor coordinator for the camp at GSU, believes this is an opportunity for a different way of learning.

"In a large classroom setting, they may not get a good understanding...but in a small setting with us, and working with our counselors and we're doing it in a create way, they say 'Oh so that's what that means' or 'That's how to do that.' So it gives us an opportunity to work one on one with them," says Foster, "It's not just chalk and talk."

Campers get binders at the start of the week complete with mock crime scene investigation cases and they get to learn about the skeletal system, fingerprinting, and blood type matching.

James Griffin, III, a former camper-turned-counselor, holds this program close to his heart.

"You're actually like a big brother or big sister to them. You're a mentor. You are teaching them that it is something more than just high school," says Griffin, a Senior pre-med major at Grambling.

LA GEAR UP at Grambling has been an overwhelming success in recent years, and now they are hosting two sessions of the program each summer. The program is funded by a grant given by the Louisiana Board of Regents. The fund started at an estimated $37,000, but due to the programs growth, this year's grant is over $100,000.
