Swartz, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Everybody loves a good deal, especially when it comes to saving money on your groceries.
Experts say even as prices continue to rise it's possible.
First things first-check the ads before you go.
"Which store has the most items that are on sale that fit into what you want to serve that week?" says Cathy Agan.
Don't bounce around from store to store either.
"You're spending gas money, you're wasting your time and keep in mind too that there are some stores that match prices," says Agan.
Next up, buy generic when you can.
"Store brands are just as good. You just have to give them a try."
The main difference between store and national brands? Marketing.
"Private labels are actually packed by national labels. Red gold tomatoes are red gold tomatoes but best choice tomatoes are red gold tomatoes too," says Michael Ferrington.
Also go early and hit the clearance section for meats and other perishables.
And speaking of perishables, here's a tip if you're buying pre bagged fruits and veggies. Weigh them.
But experts say the number one tip is being prepared, writing a list and checking through the ads.
"Make that plan have your list with you and try not to go to the store more than once a week or make impulse buys," says Agan.
