MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Non-profit group, Louisiana court appointed special advocates or CASA, is a finalist in a contest to win 50 thousand dollars.
CASA volunteers work to ensure abused children have a voice in court. All month long, Louisiana Walmart workers will vote to give thousands to a lucky non-profit. Only Sam's club or Walmart workers are able to vote in the contest. Melissa Hill of North East Louisiana's Casa Chapter says, if they win, the money will go a long way.
"We serve 11 parishes, which is the most of the CASA programs in the state of Louisiana, unfortunately there are always children coming into care. So that means we are constantly recruiting and training volunteers to speak up for the children." said Melissa Hill of CASA of NELA.
"Child abuse is definitely an issue here, specifically in North East Louisiana, so this would be a way for us to get the word out, let people know it is a problem but there are definitely ways to help by speaking up for a child in need." said Hill.
Two other non profits are also finalists, voting will continue until August 6th.
