MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Everyone is feeling the rising temperatures this season, but some of our pets are in the heat night and day.

Keeping horses safe in the hot weather is a difficult task, and Dr. Clark Cooper, DVM, of Cooper Veterinary Hospital in West Monroe says it takes more than just food and water to keep a horse in good health.

"If you can provide shade, that is the biggest thing... a lot of pastures are open, so you got to provide some type of shade. Just a four post covered roof is enough shade," says Cooper.

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine advises horse owners to prepare for extreme weather far in advance. Use two form of identification on your pets like microchips, tattoos, or brands, as well as a luggage-type tag secured to a tail or halter. Keep an emergency animal care kit in a safe, convenient place and keep a 2-3 week stock of food and water for your animals.

For any evacuation help contact the Louisiana State Animal Response Team at www.lsart.org.
