MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The National Anthem kicked off Independence Day celebrations at the Rotary Club's Triangle Park Parade Wednesday morning.

Monroe families joined the parade by decorating their bicycles, scooters, and even their pets in honor of our nation's birthday.

Monroe Rotary member, Fred Huenefeld, believes this day isn't just about having fun, but also about educating our youth. "The big key is to have a founding father of significance...a founding father to give us some history on why this nation was founded and it's background," says Huenefeld, referring to the casting of the events speaker.

He has been organizing the parade for more than three decades and says its more successful each year.

Parade participants say despite temperatures pushing triple digits, the crowd here is even larger than last year. No matter how hot it was outside, the kids participating in the parade were still excited about showing off their decorated rides.
