No tax proposal to help Ouachita seniors on the ballot

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - It's back to the drawing board for the Ouachita Council on Aging. This comes after the board that sits over the council requested a tax proposal on the November 6 General Election ballot.

"That would allow us to take care of services we cannot provide today," Council President Patrick Regan said.

Regan is leading the fight for more funds. He had hoped for an approval of a 1.10 mills property tax. It's believed to be about 26,600 seniors living in Ouachita. The older population is growing almost eight times as fast as the younger one.

"We're going to have an issue as we move down the years in taking care of our seniors," Regan said.

This is not the first time the council has come forward to ask for money. Parish and city leaders have reached into their tight spending plans back in December, mainly for the meals on wheels program.

But state and federal cut backs is making hard to continue some of the council's services. Regan is not giving up on his request for financial help.

"I guarantee you we'll be back to the police jury. We're going to continue this because it means life or death to some of these people," Regan said.

Regan believes the tax proposal is not dead, it's only on life support.
