MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - In a 5-2 vote Tuesday night, the Monroe School Board suspended Superintendent Kathleen Harris.

The board voted to adopt a resolution to investigate district operations under Harris' leadership and in a 7-0 vote authorized Chief Financial Officer Derenda Flowers to act as acting superintendent .

During the course of the 30 day investigation, Harris will still be paid. And as of Tuesday night, board members could not say how much the investigation will cost the city.

Harris' attorney Wesley Johnson told KNOE 8 News she has concerns about how the special council was hired, he's using a resolution that's from 2009. "It doesn't have the appropriate information required by state law and there is concerns regarding whether he will ultimately be paid. There is also concern overturning this open meeting law remedies that are set forth in statute." said Johnson.

"Of course those are all legal expenses that Dr. Harris was trying to avoid the district from having by paying me out of her pocket since December to stop them from continually trying to violate the law."said Johnson.

"They seemed concerned about money, but you have to wonder, there is actually a litigator waiting and it won't be me. But there is a litigation specialist that's familiar with the board and their antics." Johnson added.

The board has already chosen not to renew Harris' contract which ends on December 31.
