MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Fishermen at D'arbonne Lake may soon be limited in the amount of crappie or white perch they can catch.

"It's been voted to change the creel limit from 50 to 25 crappie per person," said Ronny Graham.

Wildlife and Fisheries Commissioner Ronnie Graham is pushing for the proposal. He believes by lowering the limit, it will allow the fish more time to get bigger - and help fishermen to catch a better quality of fish.

"It's just more fun to catch a two pound perch than it is to catch one that's 10 inches long," said Graham.

But Graham is catching opposition from other fishermen - as there is no scientific data to support claims of over fishing at the lake.

"I'm saying if we reduce it, let's base it upon scientific data instead of somebody's opinion," said fisherman Randy Wilbanks.  "Louisiana is blessed with a great wildlife and fisheries department, we have some excellent biologist, they went to school and studied and they know how to adjust the limits and if this lake needs adjusting let's let them tell us."

Fisherman Randy Wilbanks said he's been fishing at the lake since 1965 and doesn't understand why changes would be made if problems don't exist.

"Why change something if it's working," said Wilbanks.

But graham argued that the new fishing limit won't hurt people's experience on the lake.

"It's not going to hurt anything what we're doing," said Graham. "If it's not going to hurt anything, then maybe it will help something.

The proposal has not been approved yet. The process includes a 100 day period of public comment - that deadline is coming up on July 5th.
