LAKE PROVIDENCE,La. (KNOE 8 News) - There's a new sheriff on the way in East Carroll Parish. Dozens turned out to the inauguration for Sheriff-Elect Wydette Williams. This took place Saturday evening at Lake Providence High School. Williams will officially begin the job starting July first. The current sheriff, Mark Shumate is leaving the post, shortly after making some layoffs that caused a lot of controversy in the parish. But Williams says, he's ready to work with other local leaders during his time in office.
"I'm very excited, very, very excited. This is a historic moment. I'm just ready to get started on July 1st," Williams said. "We have not had a working government in East Carroll in a long time. I look forward to the partnership with the police jury, the city council, the police department to actually bring some structure here to our parish."
Williams told us a while back, that he is making plans to look into the closing of the East Carroll Detention Center.
