WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- An out of ordinary visitor created quite a stir in the West Lakes subdivision in West Monroe. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries tells us a black bear is roaming the area.

As soon as residents heard, the news spread through the neighborhood perhaps faster than the bear could trot away. "My friend called me and said there was a bear in the neighborhood but I didn't believe her at first." said a West Lakes resident Melanie Douthit.

"I was looking through instagram and I saw my friend Gracie, she had posted a picture saying that her friend had spotted the bear in her backyard." explained resident Olivia Telano.

Wildlife and Fisheries say the bear is a young and probably lost. It is not dangerous, there has never been a black bear attack in Louisiana. "Well when I heard about it at first I was like I'm not sure I really want to be outside as much." said resident Jackson Telano and according to Wildlife and Fisheries, Jackson has the right idea. Don't go looking for the bear.
If you encounter it, remain calm, do not run and back away slowly. It's probably more scare of you than you are of him.

Neighbor Ethel Landry says the visitor is different than she's accustomed to. "You know I'm not used to bears, I'm used to alligators in South Louisiana which is where we're from." The department knows where the bear is and is trying to capture and relocate it.
