LAE heads to court

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Leaders of the Louisiana Association of Educators are in court this morning, filing suit against Governor Jindal's education reform laws. The challenge claims that the new laws, which were passed in the recent session of the state legislature and signed into law by the governor, are unconstitutional because they both violate the Louisiana Constitution by providing public funding for non-public schools

The group is officially filing the papers in the 19th Judicial Courthouse.

According to LAE leaders, "...after using strong-arm tactics to coerce his leadership in the House of Representatives to vote in a manner contrary to the House's rules of operation, association members are calling for a serious examination of the constitutional missteps made by Governor Jindal.

Earlier this month, the LAE Board of Directors directed the association's executive director and legal counsel to file a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Act 2 and Senate Concurrent Resolution 99 on the grounds that both violate the Louisiana Constitution by providing public funding for non-public schools.
