MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Superintendent Kathleen Harris said the city is working to stop overcrowding in Monroe city schools.
"Lexington Elementary is at nine hundred plus students," said Harris.
That's why the board is changing the grade levels at several of it's schools to balance the teacher student ratio.
Starting this coming school year, all kindergarten through second grade students zoned for Lexington or Sallie humble will attend school at Lexington Elementary. And third through sixth graders will attend school at Sallie Humble.
Harris said the plan equally divides the student population at both schools.
"With Pre K-2nd grade, it allows a little over five hundred kids," said Harris. "And then with three through 6 again it allows about five hundred of so kids."
Sixth graders looking to attend Martin Luther King Junior Middle School will remain at their elementary school for another year - as the plan will convert M.L.K. into a junior high school for the seventh and eighth grades only.
"It moves the sixth grade back to Cypress Point but does move some of the students from Cypress Point to Lexington Elementary," said Harris. "So that we can balance out our student assignment and student population."
Harris said the board hasn't heard any negative feedback about the changes - and said what counts is what happens in the classroom.
"I think what makes for good instruction is always an excellent teacher in each and every classroom," said Harris.
