MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Junior League of Monroe donated more than 50 fans to help the elderly beat the heat Tuesday.
Using a one thousand dollar Walmart grant, the group purchased 57 brand new fans for the elderly. The fans were given to the Ouachita Council on Aging, where pre-approved seniors can pick them up for free. Fans were also donated to the Monroe Police Department, who will be delivering them to those who are home bound. "We're very excited to do that. Since 1930, the Junior League has helped out tremendously with efforts in our community as far as needs go." said Darian Atkins of the Junior League.
"This year we were able to help Ouachita council on aging getting those fans out to those elderly citizens." Atkins added. The elderly are more sensitive to heat stress than younger people. The Ouachita Council on Aging welcomes any donations of 20 inch box fans. You can drop them off at 2407 Ferrand Street in Monroe.
