Second teacher's union sues over voucher plan

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Louisiana Association of Educators says it too will file suit to throw out a set of sweeping education changes pushed by Gov. Bobby Jindal and passed by lawmakers in the just-ended legislative session.

Directors of the teachers union voted Saturday to file suit over changes to the state's elementary and secondary school funding formula that will pay for a statewide voucher program, online schools, college tuition scholarships and an expansion of charter schools.

The affiliate of the National Education Association said the changes violate the state Constitution and illegally transfer local tax money from one district to another.

The Louisiana Federation of Teachers filed two lawsuits in Baton Rouge district court Thursday, claiming the changes violate constitutional provisions governing the passage of legislation and governing the school financing formula.
