WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The investigation is on behind what led to a murder-suicide Friday morning outside a Sonic Drive-In restaurant near the intersection of Cypress Street and Well Road.
Ouachita Parish Sheriff-elect Jay Russell tells us that thirty four year old Desmond West ran over his wife, Katherine West, when she got out of the car. Next, West walked up to her body and shot her in the head. He then walked back to his car and shot himself.
All of this happened just before 6 o' clock Friday morning.
When the KNOE 8 News crew arrived, Katherine West's body was lying beside the car and the driver car door was pealed all the way to the front of the vehicle.
Russell says a Sonic employee reported the crime, but the entire event was captured on a surveillance camera.
Deputies found a protective order against Desmond West in Katherine's car. Russell says Katherine obviously felt threatened by her husband - but her restraining order wasn't enough to keep her out of harm's way.
"You have to understand that a protective order is just a piece of paper, it gives some folks a sense of security, but the best protection is yourself - either being aware of your surroundings or having the means to protect yourself by either being aware of your surroundings or by having the means to protect yourself", explains Sheriff-elect Jay Russell.
Russell says the protective order was filed out of Jackson Parish where the victim lives. Deputies are working with Jackson Parish to get more information about Desmond and his wife.
