One Ouachita pool tests positive for West Nile Virus

OUACHITA PARISH, La., (KNOE 8 News) - According to the Department of Health and Hospitals, one mosquito pool in North Monroe has tested positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV).

Mosquito pools in the parish were tested between May 23rd and May 25th. The pool where the positive test occurred is in the Garden District of North Monroe.

Local Mosquito Abatement District Director Shannon Rider told KNOE News this afternoon, that a single test like this isn't cause for undue alarm, since it could be just a one-time thing. However, she added that they continue to run tests and keep an eye on the situation.

The DHH reminds resident that when working outdoors, particularly during the evening hours, everyone should take personal protective measures. The measures include wearing a long-sleeve shirt, long pants and the use of an EPA approved repellant. The repellant should be applied to exposed skin and on thin clothing, since mosquitos can bit through thin clothing at times.

And as always, care should be taken to ensure that water holding containers are emptied to deny mosquitoes a place to breed in your area.
