JONESBORO, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Rhett Bowen is angry at what may be going into Caney Lake.

"It's not safe for my kids to be in it and it's obviously not safe for anybody else to swim in it," Bowen said.

The mobile homeowner moved from Texas back to his hometown and he recently discovered a pipeline in his backyard that leads into the lake. Bowen is afraid it may be human waste and he wants it flushed out.

"I'd like to see the water cleaned up here in Caney Lake. It used to be a nice place to fish here. You just don't know what you're getting into around here anymore."

Samples of the water were taken four years back. The Environmental Quality Department found Caney Lake filled with fecal matter. A report showed it was ten times higher than the safety limit. The department received a grant to complete a new test this year. Bowen says he made an attempt to try to get his backyard cleaned up.

"I called the EPA and they put me in touch with the regional Health Department in Texas but I got nothing but a busy signal the whole day with them."

As of now, it's unclear as to how much bacteria is in the lake. But Bowen wants the matter dealt with before it gets too late.

"All it takes is an open sore, you get sick. It's serious business. And you know, we don't play about that type of thing around here."

Bowen believes the polluting pipeline belongs to a neighbor.
