MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - War vets are taking the time to remember each soldier who has made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
"If it wasn't for those men and women that gave it all back in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan and Iraq, you all wouldn't have the freedom that you have now," said veteran Jack Sumner.
City leaders, military families, and veterans - who escaped the front lines of war....filled the lawn at Monroe City Hall. On this day, they celebrate those comrades who unfortunately never made it home.
James Stuart is disappointed that more people don't honor our veterans.
"The only people that I know that celebrate memorial day is veterans," said Stuart. The rest of the people could careless."
Mayor Jamie Mayo was a speaker at the ceremony. He said Memorial Day calls for education - as many get lost in planning weekends of BBQ and boating.
"We don't have any issues or any problems with those like to relax with their families and have BBQ and those types of things but it's wrong not to think about our family heroes. Its wrong not to remember them and pay respect with them because that's ultimately what it's all about."
Sumner said he's proud to have served his country and shares his only regret about being a vet.
"Do you have any regrets?" KNOE asked. "Yeah that the men and women didn't come home," said Sumner.
