MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Many in Northeast Louisiana are taking some time out to honor those who have died fighting for our freedom. A series of events kicked off Saturday at the War Veterans Home in Monroe. Dozens of vets and a West Monroe church teamed up to honor the fallen soldiers and prisoners of war. They also held a special wreath-laying ceremony for those missing in action. After the formal ceremony, everyone was treated to some good food and music. The guest speaker says it's important for us to always thank our veterans.

"When we interact with our veterans, we express to them our thanks or gratitude and its amazing to me these individuals whose already given so much to us, they are continuing want a know how can they help here in this community," Judge Wendell Manning said.

"I was drafted but it wasn't a, I wasn't unhappy . I was disappointed cause I was in school, but here I'm going to serve for a country that is one of the best in the country in the world and I have been to a lot of different countries, but stick with American," World War 2 Veteran Howard Lance said.
