MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- It is national boat safety week. The department of wildlife and fisheries is reminding boaters to be cautious and safe for Memorial Day weekend.

People heading to the river or lake are urged to check that they have all safety equipment on board. Extra wildlife and fisheries patrols will also be on the water this weekend. The same DWI laws that apply to the road also apply to the water.

And agents will also be checking whether children are wearing life jackets. "This weekend is one of the biggest weekends for boating, it's Memorial Day weekend. We'll have extra patrols on the water ways." said Sgt. Thomas Risser of La Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries.

"The agents will be looking for boat safety inspections, that's inspecting for life jackets, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment, and in the process of doing that we'll also be looking for careless operations and dwi's on the water ways." said Risser.

Something else to remember children in boats who are under the age of 17 must wear life jackets, or the boat operator will face a 50-dollar fine. And there's a perk if you follow the rules.
If you're stopped by agents and your child has on a life jacket, you'll get a  receive a free t-shirt.
