It's a holiday-be safe!

MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 New) - This afternoon unofficially marks the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend, as Louisiana residents leave work and hit the road for the holiday.

During the 2011 Memorial Day weekend in Louisiana, there were ten fatalities from vehicle crashes and six of those persons were unrestrained. While not all crashes are survivable, occupants who are properly restrained are much less likely to be seriously injured or killed.

And with falling gasoline prices, traffic on our roads is likely to be heavy this year. So our State Troopers will be focusing much of their attention on aggressive drivers, speeders, impaired drivers, and those who do not wear their seat belts or properly restrain children.  Louisiana State Police are currently participating in the nationwide Click It or Ticket initiative and will be proactively seeking unrestrained drivers and their passengers. Louisiana law requires all occupants to be properly restrained regardless of seating position

If you're are planning to "hit the highway" this weekend, you'll also want to make sure your vehicle is current on routine maintenance, tires have adequate tread depth, and tires are properly inflated according to vehicle manufacturer's instructions. It is also prudent to be well-rested and have alternate routes planned in advance.

If you need assistance or see any unsafe acts, sleepy or impaired drivers, or aggressive driving, you are encouraged to report it by dialing *LSP (577) from your mobile phone.
