MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- At a press conference, a major announcement was made Thursday regarding solutions for Monroe's automated water meter mistakes.

Tuesday's city council meeting showed just how out of sync, three city departments were, regarding water meter replacement oversight issues.

Which was all news to Mayor Jamie Mayo, "I was stunned to know there were things going on that I did not know about."

Mayo says at fault are communication issues, and for all involved, there is shared responsibility.
"Things could have been done better, that could have eliminated or reduced considerably where we are today." said Mayo.

The mayor spent much of Wednesday getting to the root of the cause and carving out a better plan with city leaders. "I personally think the project will go smoother from here on out because of this issue." said Council Chairman Jay Marx.

Now more defined are the specific functions of the three city departments involved. With David Barnes now leading a city oversight committee.  "It helps communication wise because now you all can point fingers at me." said Barnes.

Not present was contractor Vanguard. But Mayo says their vice president has promised to improve quality control. Denmon engineering project manager Chris Patrick says meter problems are being resolved. "I don't know of any outstanding issues that we have that would cause this project to delay in any shape fashion or form." said Patrick.

Additional money will not be needed to correct the problems. Mayor Mayo hopes the situation is not repeated. "As I said initially, the communication could be a lot stronger and that's what I've challenged this team, to make sure we do as we continue to move forward."

The residential part of the project will be completed on time, by the end of September. But the contract for the larger meters will need to be extended by 90 days.
