A major Louisiana newspaper announces a surprising change

NEW ORLEANS, La., (KNOE 8 News) - In a change that might signal a major movement in the way newspapers do business in the future, the Times-Picayune in News Orleans has announced it's dropping back its daily published newspaper to three days a week.

The new focus, according to Times-Picayune management, will be its online presence.

The 175-year-old paper announced Thursday the formation of a new company - NOLA Media Group - which includes The Times-Picayune and its NOLA.com website affiliate.

Publisher Ricky Mathews, who will be president of the new venture, said the changes were necessitated by upheaval in the newspaper industry. Mathews said the newspaper will be home-delivered and sold in stores on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

A second new company, Advance Central Services, will print and deliver the newspaper.

Mathews said Jim Amoss, currently editor of The Times-Picayune, will oversee the content of NOLA Media Group.

And, as might be expected, the announcement also said there will be unspecified staff reductions.

A newspaper executive in a large print market told KNOE news this morning that it's only a matter of time for the newspaper industry. He said it won't happen quickly, but eventually it's the path newspapers will be forced to take.
