MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Starting May 21st customers in the Highway 80 Arkansas water system may notice a difference in the taste of their tap water - Greater Ouachita Water company will no longer be using chlorine to clean its' water.

"We're going to change the disinfection from free chlorine to to chloramines," said project manager Doil Nelson.

The utility's project manager Doil Nelson said chlorine forms a dangerous by product called trihalomethane and changes must be made to meet health standards.

"The EPA rules trihalomethanes as an average under eighty," said Nelson. "And with the last test were eight-six, so in order to get the average back below eighty we are going to have to go to chloramines."

The disinfection process could be harmful to customers undergoing dialysis and some people with pet fish or reptiles.

"The people on dialysis need to consult their health professional to see about doing some additional treatment to remove the chloramine," said Nelson.

Nelson said the chloramine stays in the water a lot longer than chlorine does. And those with fish, reptiles or amphibians should contact their local pet store for more information on chloramine removal.
