BATON ROUGE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - An attempt by higher education leaders to raise charges to college students has apparently stalled in Baton Rouge.
Lawmakers in the House indicated they weren't sure that students and families of students could afford the proposed fee hike and the fee increase bill was shelved by Rep. Chris Broadwater in the House Education Committee today.
This, more than likely, kills any chance of the bill moving forward in this year's session.
The proposal could have raised as much as $107 million a year for campuses that face budget cuts of up to $225 million in the upcoming fiscal year. University leaders were pitching the increase as a way to stave off deep cuts to campuses they say could harm educational offerings.
Lawmakers, after already having raised tuitions for the schools were not happy seeing this proposal being suggested.
