MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- It may look strange at first, a shirtless student wearing a heart monitor and a mask, riding a bike.

But what you're seeing is a stress test, one of the many tests offered by ULM's new human performance lab.  "This new lab is what I would call the next generation and the culmination of excellent research that has happened since the 80's till today." said Lisa Colvin, lab director.

Using the latest technology, the lab specializes in human movement. Staffers measure aerobic and muscle fitness levels, and kinesology students can athletes perform at their best - something graduate student Jamie Wise enjoys.

"I don't think there is any better feeling than helping somebody change their life." said Graduate Student Jamie Wise.

Lisa Colvin is the director and driving force behind the lab. As an athlete herself, she loves studying fitness levels. "This is my passion. Everyday I come to work I think, "I get paid to do this?" said Colvin.

Students have that same passion, when the professor's enthusiasm makes learning a better experience.  "She is in here having fun, you know all the time, so it kinda takes that stress off of it." said Wise.

The lab is a first of it's kind in Louisiana, giving students hands on experience, that wouldn't be possible at larger universities. "I take them by the hand when they first get here and let them go little by little, so when they graduate they are work ready." said Colvin.

The lab is open for anyone to use, whether you are an athlete or want to be as healthful as one.
