East Prairie, Mo., (KNOE 8 News) - An earthquake in Southeast Missouri apparently woke up people in 9 mostly southeastern states overnight. Louisiana was not one of the nine, which included Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Indiana and Georgia.
Only minor damage was reported following the magnitude 4.0 quake.
East Prairie City Administrator Lonnie Thurmond says the shaking lasted about seven seconds. Vaughan says he's heard reports of cracks in sidewalks and walls, some broken windows, and minor household damage such as rattled shelves and things falling from cabinets.
