SHREVEPORT, La. (KNOE 8 News) – The trial of former Winn Parish Sheriff "Bodie" Little began with jury selection in Shreveport on Tuesday.

Little is accused of helping his mistress, "Lulu" Thompson, distribute drugs as part of an organized group dealing with at least 50 grams of methamphetamine.

Little's charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, along with two counts of illegally using a communication facility.

He denies the charges, calling them politically motivated.

Ten others involved in the case have pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Little if necessary.

Little became sheriff in 2008, promising to crack down on drugs around the parish.

"One of my promises, and of course I have a ten year old and six year old son, and one of my promises, and the reason I ran, was about the drugs," Little said in 2009.

"We've got a terrible drug problem here in Winn Parish, and we're doing our best to clean it up," he had said.

After his arrest Little was first put on house arrest, but it was revoked when he allegedly asked his wife to pick up files from his office.

A judge also ordered Little to take a leave of absence from his position as sheriff, saying Little could have "put law enforcement (officers) at risk."

Brenda Usrey has served as interim sheriff.  Cranford Jordan was elected to the permanent position in November, but he won't take office until July.
