LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Defense attorneys for Martha Shoffner will begin presenting their case in the former Arkansas treasurer's federal bribery trial. The prosecution rested its case yesterday in federal court. Prosecutors accuse Shoffner of accepting $36,000 from bond broker Steele Stephens in exchange for steering state business his way.
MEDFORD, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a 24-year-old Arkansas man was killed when his truck was hit by a freight train. Authorities say Cort Daugherty of Huntsville, Ark., died in the collision yesterday. The highway patrol says Daugherty was driving west on Oklahoma Highway 11 when he failed to yield to a Union Pacific train.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas legislative committee is scheduled to hear from state highway officials about their response to a winter storm that left drivers stranded on icy interstates last week. A joint meeting with both House and Senate members is set for today to hear from Highway and Transportation Department Director Scott Bennett. Motorists were stuck in standstill traffic last week on Interstates 55 and 40 in eastern Arkansas.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Work on Arkansas Highway 70 will require lane closures in Garland and Saline counties between Hot Springs and Interstate 30. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department says crews will be performing drilling and sampling in preparation for widening Highway 70. The weekday closures start today and run through March 20th.
