LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Little Rock-based Bank of the Ozarks has announced a plan to acquire Bancshares Inc. of Houston. Bank of the Ozarks says it will purchase all the outstanding Bancshares common stock in a deal estimated to be worth about $23 million. The deal is expected to close during the first quarter of 2014.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A judge will hear oral arguments next month in a lawsuit challenging Arkansas' new lethal injection law. Nine death row inmates are suing over an execution law that legislators enacted this year. That new law came about after the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled legislators had given corrections officials too much control over execution procedures. Arkansas has about 40 people on death row but hasn't executed anyone since 2005.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe says other state programs may have to be cut if lawmakers deny funding for a Medicaid expansion next year. Beebe has told officials of electric cooperatives in the state that the private option to expand Medicaid freed up enough money for about $100 million in tax cuts during the last legislative session.
ATLANTA (AP) - Arkansas center Travis Swanson has made The Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference football team. Tight end Hunter Henry and kicker Zach Hocker of the Razorbacks made the SEC second team. And Alex Collins has been named top freshman.
