MONROE (KNOE 8 News) -- One man is left dead in West Monroe after an attempt at a late night home invasion goes wrong.
Neighbor Kathy Van Buren says, "It was just a home invasion. Unknown suspects... Home invasion... That's all we know."
West Monroe Police are still investigating and have not identified any of persons wanted in connection with the break-in, except for the man who was killed.
KNOE 8's Bakari Savage reports, "One of the home invaders was shot inside before stumbling out and falling to the ground, where he bled to death."
That's where police found the body of 26 year-old Ervin Darrell Ausberry.
Police cannot confirm the number of burglars, but neighbors believe there had to be at least four that attempted the break-in around two a-m.
Van Buren continues, "I heard the gunshot."
Neighbors say what they thought was firecrackers turned out to be gunfire.
Police have recovered the dead man's car. It was across the river on White Street in Monroe.
Kathy Van Buren tells KNOE 8 that no one recognized the intruders.
Van Buren explains, "This is a neighborhood of family. All of us are not relatives, but we might as well have been here. We've all been here practically all of our lives."
The homeowner was slightly hurt, suffering cuts to the head.
