MONROE (KNOE 8 NEWS) - 27 year old Joseph Woods is in custody, accused of holding up workers and customers at a Monroe bingo hall. Metro bingo had only been open about 90 minutes before the gunman walked in and robbed those inside. Workers at nearby businesses in the Eastgate Shopping Center tell KNOE 8 News they normally see a security guard on duty there, but this was not the case Wednesday.
Fearful workers and others at Metro Bingo found their lives in jeopardy when a robber walked through the front door just before two p.m. Monroe police say after the gunman got their cash, he ran away heading toward Breard Street, but didn't get very far.
Lt. Jeff Harris says, "Officers did see him in the area. He laid down on us. We were able to get a canine officer out here. After the canine officer arrived, within two minutes he was in custody."
Police found the suspected robber between scrap metal.
An accurate description of the man given by witnesses was a big help to police, plus the fact that officers were in the area, leading to his quick capture.
One nearby store manager did lock her doors until she knew the accused gunman was found and in custody.
Fortunately no one was hurt.
