RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8)  -  Rushing Haise thought he wanted to be a scientist. Then he took an art class in high school.

"I'd always enjoyed the arts, but it was a never a real focus," said Haise, a sophomore communications design student at Louisiana Tech University, and winner of the 2009 Squire Creek Louisiana Peach Festival poster contest.

The festival is June 26-28 in Ruston. Haise' winning design is "completely digital." In keeping with the festival them - Belle of the Season - the computer-generated poster features a young, hoop-skirt-clad woman walking through a peach orchard. Behind her back, she carries a basketful of peaches.

The poster has a vintage, stylized look.

"I just worked on it until I made it look like an old photograph," Haise, of Alexandria, said. "My first idea was to do something old style, kind of like an advertisement, but I ended up stylizing the picture."

Haise did the poster's background, then found four photographs that he graphically altered to make up the single design. He said the poster took about 30 hours to complete.

"It was a lot of trial and error," he said.

Haise, who also plays several musical instruments, said art "really grabbed hold of me" during his high school art classes. "There are so many possibilities."

He said he chose Tech based upon the reputation of its art and communication design programs.

Haise's original poster will be auctioned during the festival's Blue Ribbon Garden Party on June 19. Signed and numbered posters are $25; unsigned, $10. Both will be available at the Chamber office located at 2111 North Trenton St., and at the festival. Posters and other festival merchandise can also be ordered through the festival website, www.louisianapeachfestival.org.
