MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The University of Louisiana at Monroe released a statement on Friday after the passing of a 19-year-old student athlete.

In the statement, the student was identified as Semaj Lewis. Officials say Lewis died on Thursday, but did not elaborate.

The school offered these words for Lewis' family and friends:

Pres. Nick Bruno said, “He was a bright student with a wonderful future ahead of him. Our sympathies and prayers are with his family and friends as they cope with this terrible loss.”

Track Coach J.D. Malone said, “It is with incredible sadness that we learned of the passing of one of our student-athletes yesterday, Semaj Lewis. His sly smile and quiet sense of humor made him a favorite among his teammates and our staff. I ask the Warhawk family to remember his family in their prayers.”

According to ULM, Lewis was originally from Hahnville, Louisiana. They say he also played football and was on the track team at De La Salle High School, where he graduated in 2016.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
