Pawn shop offers woman a second chance after stealing jewelry

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A woman accused of stealing $2,300 worth of jewelry at The Aurum Place in Monroe and it was all caught on surveillance video.

Police arrested Rachelle Jefferson for shoplifting. They say Jefferson admitted to stealing the jewelry.

Aurum Place employee, Mo Abas, says it didn't take long for them to notice the items were missing.

"We posted her picture and exactly what she did, her reaching over the counter, her stealing, and we offered a reward," Abas says.

Abas says they then looked through surveillance video to find out who stole the items.

The video showed a woman reaching over the jewelry cabinet, opening the door and grabbing the items. When the employee comes back, she quickly walks over to the other side of the store.

Abas says they then reached out to people through social media.

"We posted her picture and exactly what she did, her reaching over the counter, her stealing, and we offered a reward," Abas says.

20-minutes later, someone reaches out with Jefferson's information. They then called the police and presented Jefferson with an option.

"We called her, offered her a deal, that she wouldn't be arrested if she brought back the stuff," Abas says.

But when Jefferson got to the store on Thursday night, she did not have the jewelry.

"The thing is she kept lying, had she been truthful with us, we could have worked with the cops, we could have worked with her or whatever, but no, she decided to lie," Abas says.

The owner of the store says this is the first time something like this has happened.
