MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Hundreds of students and members of the community packed the W. L. "Jack" Howard Theater at the Monroe Civic Center Thursday for the 39th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Salute.

The message for this year's event is "Together We Win With Love For Humanity".

Awards were presented to people and organizations demonstrating excellence in justice, unity, community service, education, public service, and humanitarian efforts.

Grambling State Choir was present to sing "Lift Every Voice & Sing" as well as "Precious Lord Take My Hand".

Grambling State University President Dr. Rick Gallot was the guest speaker and his message reflects what Dr. King showed: love.

"Dr. King did so much in his short lifetime to try and bring us together as a Country and so I think now, as relevant as it was during his lifetime, that we need a message of love, a message of hope, and of unity," Gallot says.

There are several other events planned to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. including a peach march at Grambling State University on Monday.
