GRAMBLING, La ( KNOE 8 News) - The current student enrollment at Grambling State University is 4,863. This number is 310 more students than last year at this time. Faculty and staff at the school say this is because they've been working diligently at making it easier for students to enroll.
"All hands on deck approach, alumni and staff. " Those were the words from Enrollment Manager Damon Wade, who has witnessed declining enrollment number for the past three years, and he said there needed to be a change.
"We try to reach them online when their in [high]school. We use a platform that allows us to reach them and they can ask us questions about the admissions process."
Now that enrollment is up, the college must fight to keep it up, which isn't easy with federal grants and scholarships going down. Right now the school has a 68% retention rate, and Retention Specialist Keli Wright says they have plans to improve those numbers.
"We are going to start gap funding to help students who cant afford to pay for school, and that picks up that extra 500 to 1200 dollar cost."
