East Carroll Parish, La (KNOE) - Family and people in the community said they're trying to understand and process the loss of a 7-year-old boy.
"I came to the door when the police were gathered out there, and I looked and seen the little child lying down on the ground on his back," Ethel Foley, a neighbor, said.
The East Carroll Parish Sheriff's office said a 12-year-old boy found a gun at a Lake Providence home Monday afternoon.
The sheriff said he picked it up and accidentally shot and killed his 7-year-old little brother.
Six kids were home alone at the time. Family members said their mom was at work.
"What would you do? You have seven children-- nobody to help you take care of. I can understand she was at work. Sure, she shouldn't have left the children at home, but when you don't have the help, you have to do what you have to do," Dora Jones, a family member said, said.
The sheriff's office initially took on the investigation but turned it over to state police who said the shooting happened in a bedroom at home.
It's a situation that's leaving family members stuck trying to wrap their minds around what happened.
"They are broken-hearted, sick. There's nothing they can do, but feel like they feel," Jones said.
It's a feeling that not only the family is affected by, but the entire neighborhood which is filled with family and friends.
"When one hurt we're all hurting. We just do what we can to get through the grieve and pain," Jones said.
No word on if anyone will face any charges at this time.
